Clayborne Holmes (Col'd. vs. Robert Ruffin (Col'd)

Charge  Non payment of wages.
Plea Not guilty

Claybourne Holmes (Col'd) being duly sworn deposeth as follows. Went to work for Ruffin Dec 26th 1865 agreed to work for one year at the rate of one hundred dollars per year and board if they could agree for that length of time. worked until July 5th 1866. received pay by orders for clothing &c to the amount of twenty nine dollars and fifty cents and agreed to pay for corn that was last belonging to Mr Wilson and Mr Williams. did not agree to pay for that belonging to Smith or Walters. nor for fourteen bushels owned by Ruffin. Asked Ruffin repeatedly for a settlement but was refused any further payment Robert Ruffin (Col'd) being duly sworn deposeth as follows. [?] the owner of a Grist Mill, employed Claybourne Holmes. Plaintiff as Miller for one year from Jany 1st 1866 at the rate of one hundred dollars a year. and board. if they could agree. (Agreement shown) Holmes worked for him until July 5th 1866. had paid him sixty two dollars up to that time. past payment was in orders for clothing &c and the balance was for corn that had been lost by neglect of the miller while absent from home on or about April 16' 1866. There was fourteen bushels of corn lost or stolen from the Mill. Holmes agreed to make the loss good had charged him with the value of said corn
