return on demand.  gave it in presence of Ruffins family.  have asked him for the money several times but he would not return it.  have demanded repeatedly the balance of his wages.  could never get any satisfaction.

Robert Ruffin, Defendent, being duly sworn deposeth as follows.  Was the owner of Ruffins Mill (so called) Employed Armstead Taylor (col'd) from March 9th 1895 to December 26' 1865.  agreed to give him twenty dollars per month only.  did agree to pay him twenty five dollars if the price of corn increased but with the proviso if the price decreased his wages should do so likewise.  Sold a horse to Taylor for sixty five dollars.  had not yet given him a clear title for the horse.

On request of defendent (Robert Ruffin) the case was adjourned to August 8th 1866 to allow him time to summon witnesses and obtain counsel.
