While we feel, and it was generally acknowledged, that our department contained the most refractory and troublesome elements of the entire School, we consider that we have great cause for congratulation in the success that has attended our efforts to harmonize, discipline and instruct our pupils. The improvement has seemed almost like taming utter wildness. So evident and marked has it been in every respect.

We had not stupidity to contend with, but roguery viciousness (in a few cases) and listless habits contracted doubtless at the Pay schools (so called) that have been in operation during the summer.

For various reasons also, the school had had the misfortune to have changed hands several times, and the African nature is peculiarly susceptible to those evil results which most almost invariably attend such changes. Our school being held in the body of the church we have had none but the barest conveniences to assist us; not even a black board, with no desks, and dependent entirely upon slate for writing lessons. The chirography of the school would be considered something to boast of, in most Northern schools.
