sufficient inducement is held out.

If a detective cannot be sent, I would recommend that a liberal reward be offered (privately for the present) for the arrest &c.

Major,
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of extract from report of an Inspecting Officer furnished this office for information and recommendation as to removals and appointments therein suggested, & would state that I have delayed replying because of the temporary absence of Mr Powers.

I have this day seen him, and he expresses a willingness to accept the appointment of Sheriff. He is in every way fitted for the position, Has large interest in this county, and is efficient and capable.

The removal of Mr Thomas is a matter of necessity. The quiet and welfare of this community demand it.

Mr. Stevens declines the appointment of assessor.

Very respectfully
