Brooksville. Miss. July 18. 1867

Mr "W.H. Ross
Ag't B.R.F & A.L."
Macon, Miss

Sir
Your favor of the 15th inst is received, in which you state that "Andy Roby" has alleged that I have his child, (a little girl) in charge, and that his application for the "Custody of his child" has been refused; and that I will call at your office this week and "show cause for detention of said child".

The facts in the case are these,

1st The child referred to is not "Andys" - unless a jet black woman as her mother was, and a jet black man as "Andy" is, could produce between them a half white, or bright mulatto child.

Andy was the slave of my wife (formerly Mrs Roby) [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] as also was the mother of this child whom Andy had taken as wife.

The mother of the child died during the war, leaving the child an orphan.
