NARA 514

Shuqualak July 29th 1867.

Agent Freedman's Bureau

Columbus Miss.

Dr. Sir -

I respectfully state that there is on my place near Shuqualak an old Negro woman, who is now and has been for many years past labour and unable altogether to support herself - She has no relations here - and has been taxable to me ever since the surrender. I have made some effort to have her supported by the Public, [[folded/obscured]] that the only way to releave myself from this charge was to send her to one of the members of the Board of Police.

This I would prefer not doing as this old woman does not wish to leave this place - and seems to be be attached to the family - I mentioned This case to Mr. Puckett our deputy assessor a few days ago, and it is at his suggestion that I write to you on the subject. In fact, he proposed to write to you himself.

Will you be Kind Enough to inform me if you have the power and are disposed to do any thing in the matter, and to believe that I would not trouble you about it, but that I am in reduced circumstances myself.

Respectfully &c
Jno. T. Moseley

The womans name is Phebe, and [[?]] is 75 or 80 years old.
