A freedman that I have hired by the name of Terner. Smith whiped his wife not long since he was arrested & could not pay the find had I not of paid it he would have been taken out of the farm & his crop would have been lost, since then I have indevered to keep down all fuss on my place which I thought was my duty. 

Last friday Knight Lowis, Brown, came in my yard & began to abuse his wife he went on to struck an extensive rate till I went out & told him to stop as the law involved me in it but it did no good. he nearly turned on me & used very vulgar or insulting language [[strikethrough]] t[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] much for white man or negrow to say in a man's yard. I let him alone & on Saturday morning repoarted him to Sgrt Hill Justice of the pease
