Scooba Dec. 25th 1867.
Major Smith
Agt Bureau Macon Miss

Dear Sir.
There is trouble in your County on the border of this county originating with, as we understand, one John Orst (white) & one James R. Moore of Cooksville, calling himself a "Justice of the Peace & Agt of the Freedmen" It appears the said John Orst under the authority of a writ issued by the said James R. Moore, has entered this county & arrested certain parties near or at the Jack Place-taking guns & other property & searching houses & breaking open trunks &c & committing diverse depredations on the citizens of this County. Now, peace & quiet in this County at this time is particularly desirable & we ask you to investigate the doings of the parties above named, if you please, & confer a favor on the undersigned & on the peacebly disposed portion of our Country above named.
