GENERAL ORDERS,
No. 8.  

During the Election to be held in the State of Mississippi, commencing on the 22nd instant, Commanding Officers of Posts, Stations, or Detachments in their Sub-District, will be held responsible for the preservation of peace and good order, at their respective Posts or Stations, and in the vicinity thereof, taking such measures as may be considered necessary to that end. Assistance will be rendered to Registrars, Sheriffs and other civil officers, when called for-the commanding officer being the judge of the necessity for such assistance. Commanding officers are authorized to send detachments or parties to such places in the vicinity of their Posts or Stations as may be considered necessary to preserve the public peace, bring offenders to justice, and protect all classes of the community in the right of voting free from all intimidation.
