NARA 979

Shuqualak Nov 21. 1868

My dear mayor:
As the request of Mr. Henry Jackson the employer of the [[bearer?]] Joe - I make the following statement of facts as they have been represented to me and request you to interest yourself in the matter to the extent your duty shall seem to indicate:

Joe by the permissions of Henry Jackson sold to Mr Wingate 100 bus corn in order to pay him Jackson a ballance due him on account and also to buy him (Joe) some clothes. The corn is no sooner dilivered than Mr Wingate is garnished by Mr Jas Shelton who claims the proceeds of said corn to satisfy a debt contracted by Joe two years ago.

It further appears that the debt contracted to Shelton was for provisions which were got on Mr Thos. Galbright's order and said Galbright agreeing to become accountable to Shelton therefore. The account was forwarded to Galbright by Shelton and as Galbright failed to pay either Joe or Shelton, Shelton has informed them, now comes onto Joe for the amount as above.

Truly yours
R.C. Powers

P.S
Gen'l did not come to visit us, Cause sickness in his family.
