defence of rebel principles. Though not regularly mustered into its service. These facts are too notorious to be disputed. Every man black and white with whom I have talked about this fellow (I have seen many) pronounce him to be "a grand rascal" no one has any confidence in him & recommends that this man be instructed to prosecute his claims without the aid of the U.S. Govt. as he has beyond doubt given aid and comfort to the rebellion and hence is unworthy. and should not receive the same benefits that his more ignorant but less disloyal freedmen are entitled to.
