Winston which I enclose. They show a less amount due each of them, than the amounts acknowledged in the due bills . Mr. G. says the amount rendered is correct, and thinks if the items were called off to the claimants, they would admit them to be correct. It will be observed Mr. G. has added affidavits of Jno Fossett and Jno. Edwards colored men, who were present when the contracts were made. Mr. G. says he had no thought of the Winstons leaving at the time the settlement was made with them. Mr. G. has the reputation of being a correct business man and a punctual payer particularly to his hired hands he says he is ready to pay the due bills wherever the claimants shall be satisfied

Respectfully returned to Maj. Remington Sub. Asst. Comr. It is almost impossible to answer correctly the questions propounded as there is no record to show what amount of wood was on the Farm at any time. I learn from the people residing on the Farm at the time the award was made there was about 150 cords on the Farm. The amount of wood remaining when the Farm was given up is estimated to be some 7 or 8 cords. The number of Freedmen on the Farm when given up is estimated at 500. The number on it during the time for which payment was made was about 700.

Not a building for colored schools other than these now used can be obtained in the City of Petersburg. most of those in use are condemned dwelling houses. I am of the opinion that should these be relinquished during the summer vacation not a building can be obtained in the fall. On more mature consideration, however, I doubt the property of adding school funds to those of benevolent societies for the purpose of erecting school houses, as such societies, might claim a controlling influence on the building.
