Office 1st Div. 7th S. Dist. Va.

Respectfully returned to Capt. R. S. Lacey, Agt. in chge., with the information that I called on Mrs Dr. Hammer. She is not in want of any relief which Bureau regulations would justify furnishing and if she were, the Civil Authorities are giving such aid to whites. Mrs. Hammer stated to me that her boarders keep her tabb up; that she is in debt $200 for rent; that she was aware that the last Act of Congress made no provision for such cases as hers, but she thought Genl: Howard might use his influence with some aid Society, & obtain for her funds sufficient to meet her pressing wants. Her husband's health is improving & one of her children is now earning his own support.
