ness to return to her mother-an indistinct or no remembrance of the latter and kind treatment by Mrs. Bird, it is presumed, being the reason Mrs. B. seemed to think very highly of Grace & wishes to retrieve her-at least until her husband returns to this city, when, she thinks, he can produce indentures binding the child to him. Mr. Bird is expected next month, but at what time it is not known.

Respectfully returned to Capt. S.P. Lee, S.A.C. Alex. Va. with information that I have visited Dumfries and find that there are only 20 or 25 children that could go to school in that vicinity. There is no building, that could be obtained for that purpose. There are very few freedpeople in that section of the County and they could not support a school themselves. I would like very much that a school should be established in that section.
