Respectfully returned to Bvt: Brig: Gen. O. Brown, Asst. Comr. thro. Capt R. S. Lacy, Agt. &c. I wrote to the clerk of the court for the record & evidence - stating that if the evidence was not taken down at the time, I would take a synopsis of the evidence from the Commonwealth Atty, and get it endorsed by the defendant counsel. The only answer I received from J. D. Alexander clerk, was that there was no record kept and Mr. J. C. Merrell, Commonwealth Atty. says, the proof was positive against Granville Dupriest. (Col'd)

There is one witness in behalf of Granville I did not get - Jeffries -- His testimony corroborates Hinsbich, Johnson & Marshall, I would state that the evidence in the main is the same as that given in Court. The statement of Mr. John F. Perron J.P. in regard to Mr. Alexander's message did not appear before the Court.
Wilson Alexander (Col'd) told quite as many lies there as he tells here, I cannot say, they were exactly the same in every respect - as to the evidence of the conspiracy there is no proof - several respectable gentlemen have told me they believed it was made up by John D. Alexander but there was no evidence to substantiate their opinion.
Granville is losing much and so is the community in which he lives because this is a busy season -
I was just asked a few moments ago if there was any chance for his being set at liberty. A petition is in circulation among the whites to have Granville pardoned.
Mr. Alexander who handed me the copy of the warrant attached says he could not find the other warrant upon which Granville was arrested.
Granville had begun his testimony when I got in Court, and I was told that he was caught in the still-house which accounts for the error in my first report.
