Bvt. - Brevet
Order of things:
The INDEX REFERENCE info: EX: A.501.2.V.67.
This is the initial, then letter number, 2nd Vol. 1867. This is what is most important. There are sometimes more than one name or Dept. listed under this same INDEX REFERENCE, so that is why it should go first.
A.501.2.V.67.
Va. First Dist.
Bu.R.F. & A.L.
Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr. Va.
Richmond, Va. July 10th 67.
When a researcher is trying to find a letter dealing with a certain name, like we see in these letters, or a Dept., like the War Dept. or whatever is in the left margin, they will be given this INDEX REFERENCE to find this letter.
You see two or more names sometimes listed in the margin under the same INDEX REFERENCE. They are mentioned in the letter or in some way connected to the subject of the letter. The extra pages in left margin are for another page in that vol. that has something to do with this letter. That is what I have found.
