Respectfully returned to Capt. Wm. P. Austin, S.A.C. with the information that a man saying to be Nelson Nash called twice from Russell to claim the deposit book, But failed each time to identify himself, or to comply to the requirements called for by Genl. Burbank endorsement. The first time he called he had nothing with him to show he was the man. I told him to go back fetch his discharge papers with him and some one to Identify him as the man Nash, or a letter from some responsible person in Russell Co. certifying as to he being the proper man. He took with him only his discharge papers and his person did not answer to the Descriptive List there given.
The Descriptive List (said) Nelson Nash was 24 years old 5 feet 7 in. high Black complected. When the man who represented himself to me was six feet high - yellow complected. I did not feel authorized to give the Bank Book up without further proofs and this man seemed indisposed to take anything short of the money. I took trouble to explain to him that there was certain forms to comply with before I could give it out of my possession by the receipt of two men as to his identity. He felt rather indignant at this and returned back and said he would not call any more, hence I return it.
