Lodwick Ham left the plantation of Maynard Ham in the spring or summer of 1865 and went to New-Berne, N. Ca. Sally Best left the plantation of Nicholas Best about the same time and also went to New Berne. I infer that the persons named above and referred to in the letter are those sought; and am informed indirectly that they now reside at New Berne N.C. (Sgd.) C.E. Compton Maj: & S.A.C. Bu. R.F. & A.L. Office Asst. Supt. Claim Div. New Berne, N.Ca. July 23rd 67. Respectfully returned-although diligent search and inquiry have been made for the within named persons; no trace of them has been found in New Berne N.C.
