Respectfully returned to Bvt: Brig. Genl O. Brown, Asst. Comr. Va. Mary Laws cold. states that she is an old fellow servant of Cornelia Wheller, that they belonged to the Mason family, that this boy has been living with Mrs. Wret (one of the Mason family and his late misstress) since his birth, he is about 15 years of age; he left Mrs Wret and went to live with her (Mary Laws) about two months ago, he is now at service with W. H. Smith who keeps a restaurant corner of King and Royal street, Alexandria, Va. and who has agreed to give him $4.00/100 per month and his board, the boy wants to go to his mother.— Mrs Wret is staying in Alexandria she brought the boy here with her, she is going to New Orleans this autumn, and wishes to take the boy to his mother and would do so at her own expense, if the boy could be induced to stay with her, until that time which I will try to induce him to do.

Respectfully referring to within communication to Major G. Mallery, A.A.A. Genl. &c. I have the honor to state that the previous application referred to within was forwarded to Brig: Genl O. Brown, Asst. Comr. Va. on the 15th of July 67— with the recommendation that the request be granted as a matter of economy — as it would relieve the Bureau of continued expense. No transportation having been furnished, and no statement sent me in regard to the same. I judge it proper to again recommend that it be granted, if consistent with the regulation of the Bureau.
