Christiansburg, Va. Sept. 23rd 67.

Respectfully returned to Capt. Wm. P. Austin, S.A.C. with information that the stewards of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Charlottesville are responsible for the payment of the enclosed bill for board. Rev. Mr. Thos. Elliott however states that in case they positively refuse to pay it, he will himself, as far as he may have it in his power, cancel by installments this indebtedness. He has written to them about it, but up to the present, no answer has been received to his letters. He has no property by the sale of which this amount could be recovered, and receives barely sufficient support from his present charge to sustain himself and family. Still he will do what he can to have the debt cancelled.
