I have had a long interview with Mrs. Betsy Rivers (formerly Mrs. Williams) separate and apart from her husband Pleasant Rivers. I will add that I brought every thing to bear that I could to induce her to let her son John Henry go to his father. No persuasion or inducement offered was of any avail. She appears to be determined not to give up her son. She appreciates the kind offer and has the kindest regard for the little boys father. There is no ill feeling on her part or that of her husband, Pleasant Rivers, towards Mr Williams - both seem to appreciate his kind offer. The mother says she cannot give up her child. This is one of the many hardships that arises from the late condition of Slavery. The laws of this state would give the child
