Respectfully returned to Capt. W.P. Austin, S.A.C. with the information, that the communication referred to, Enclosing twenty five ($25.) Dollars, was received at this office Sept. 13th 1867, and that steps were immediately taken to have the instructions therein contained, fully complied with. I have written no less than six communications addressed to the boy John Whitley in case of prominent citizens residing at Clover Hollow, Giles County. I also had personal interviews with Mr. John Surface, Herman T. Jones & others of Clover Hollow through when I sent verbal communication to the said Whitley, to report to me without the last delay. I also

went over to Clover Hollow myself but the boy being absent from the place, I did not get to see him, but left instructions for him to report to me at Christiansburg. The facts are these, as far as I can obtain the information - A suit is pending in the Giles Co. Court, and this boy is one of the principal waitresses. The parties interested have prevailed on the boy to remain until the case is settled.
On Wednesday last I sent by H.T. Jones of Giles Co. an imperative order for him to report to me, without fail, during the present week - and also an order warning all persons hindering him that they would be promptly dealt with should he not comply with these last instructions, I will then without delay, investigate the case fully - the result of which will be returned with the original communication.

Respectfully forwarded to Maj: Gen'l O.O. Howard, Comr. requesting permission to sell the within revised property at public sale. It was formerly in possession of a Bureau Clerk, as Bureau property, and while in his hands, was seized for his private debts, but was relinquished by the Civil Authorities on the demand of the Bureau Offices. It is impossible to ascertain from what source this property was received.
