Capt. & S.A.C.

In reply to your enquiries regarding Moses G. Cleveland, Cold, I have to state that to my personal knowledge Daniel Mc Pherson of Jefferson Co. Va. purchased Moses from the Estate of the late Genl. Cleveland, about the year 1820. Moses was probably under the impression that he was left free by the will of Genl. Cleveland, & continued to be free which with the late Caniel Mc Pherson, hence claims remuneration for his services, but to my certain knowledge he was the slave of Mc Pherson, and continues to be the property of the estate until emancipated by the late war. In consequence of a rupture which much disabled Moses he was not required to perform any laborious labor during the last few years of his stay at the estate of Mc Pherson. In my opinion he did not more than pay his way while there the last few years. I am confident that the will of Daniel Mc Pherson, which is on record in Jefferson County Va. as is also that of Genl. Cleveland, If I mistake not, will substantiate what I have written here concerning Moses's freedom &c.
