6 Office Sub Commr Meridian Miss April 7th 1866 Stone Benj. Justice of the Peace Newton County Dear Sir: The bearer Ellick has been badly beaten by some citizens of your County. I desire you to take cognizance of the outrage and bring the guilty Parties to justice - about time this practice was abolished Very Respectfully Your Most Obt Jno. J. Please remit the amount by mail at my risk and much Oblige Your Most Obt Jno. J. Knox Bvt Maj & Sub Commr Dist of Meridian Office Sub Commissioner FB Meridian Miss April 9th 1866 Williams Jordan Lauderdale Co Sir Complaint has been made to this Office by the bearer that your Wife & Son Beat her that you have since sent her away as your family could not agree and have not paid her what was due you will pay her what you owe her without any further delay or I shall proceed to further action in the case. April 9th 1866 Davenport Lieut EDL Post Adjnt Meridian Lieut I have the honor to ask for Transportation for Ellick Washington Corporal Co "F" 32 U.S.C.I. from Lauderdale Springs to this place. This Corporal goes to Lauderdale in charge of Patients for the Asylum. Transportation was furnished by Order of Genl. Wood for himself and Patients from here to Lauderdale - but none for him to return. I am Very Respectfully Your Most Obt Servant Jno. J. Knox Bvt Maj & Sub Commr Office Sub Commissioner Meridian Miss April 13th 1866 Eldridge Stuart Lieut & A.A.A. Genrl FB. Vicksburg Miss Lieut I have the honor to report that a Freedman was murdered yesterday in this County near Marion Station by a white man named Johnson - he has been arrested by the Civil Authorities.
