20 Office Sub Comm'r Dis of Meridian Meridian Miss April 28th 1866 Newman Rev J.E. Dear Sir The bearer Jackson enters complaint n this office concerning an agreement between him and yourself for his labor during this present year states that he worked for you arearly two months with the exception of the first month for a share of the crops for the first month he was to received fourteen dollars and a suit of cloths which he did not receive nor has he received any money for the remaining two months that he worked, he states that he left your because he was not permitted to work in the field were two half of this time and while he was not in the field he received nothing for his labor. Knox Bvt Maj Sub Commissioner Dis of Meridian Office Sub Commissioner Dist of Meridian Miss April 30th 1866 M Daniel James Kemper Co Dear Sir The bearer "Malinda" has made a complaint at this Office stating that she contracted with Mrs. Seggett for her services during this year that Mrs. S. drove her off and that a Mr Jack Adams forced her to work for you without making any contract She also states that you make her work very hard and that she expects nothing for her services. Her statement seems to be incredulous and you will oblige me by sending a statement of her case. She also says she is afraid you will beat or shoot her if she returns. I have assured her that you will do neither - If she contracted with you of course you are entitled to her services if not I do not suppose you wish to retain her by force.
