Meridian Miss April 30th 1866

Warren Rev Joseph
Supt of Education
State of Miss.

Dear Sir

I have the honor to enclose herewith monthly reports of schools at this place the number of pupils have somewhat diminished since last report. by reason of the colored Reg. having left yet I think the present number will be increased during the next month. Teachers and scholars are doing well and no fault can be found with the manner in which the schools are being conducted. At last we have plenty of School room and with the assistance of service Fred Mechanis I had Desks. seats be erected in the new school room. I visited the school at Enterprise and saw much pleased with the intelligence exhibited by Mr. Campbells pupils, whatever his faults may be he is in my opinion a good Teacher and is doing a great deal of good at enterprise without very much compensation therefore, To my purpose to visit all the schools in my District during this month, but our [[?]] prohibit us from incurring additional expense and have been looking for an order for some time to make a tour of the District, I find on Plantations the Freedmen are asking quite an interest in learning to read many of them have books and devote their leisure time to thereof are I urge upon him the great importance of learning how to read and write wherefore such whenever I speak to them. Hoping I may be able to give you more information in regard to the schools of this District in your next report.
