28 Bureau Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands Office Sub Commr Meridian Miss May 3rd 1866 Heedberg Lieut A.15th U.S.A. Commanding Post Meridian Miss Lieut- I have the honor to apply for a Guard of Nov Non Commissioned Officers and six men. From the assault made upon us a few nights ago and from threats that I have since heard on the street I deem it unsafe to remain here and respectfully ask for protection. I am Lieut- Very Respect Your Most Obt Servt Jno. J. Knox Bvt-Maj & Sub Commr District of Meridian Bureau Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands Office Sub Commissioner Meridian Miss May 3rd 1866 Mississippi Messenger Editions I notice in your issue of this morning under the head of "Military Arrest" that your information in regard to the cause of the same was very indefinite the man from Choctaw Ala. (I withold his name out of respect for his family) whom I arrested yesterday went into the private room of the Ladies who are engaged in teaching the Freedmens School here and grossly insulted them - An Officer on duty with me asked him what he meant by such conduct whereupon he made an assault upon him and I arrested him and sent him to the "Lock up" I kept him there a few hours when his friends called and politely asked me to release him and they would vouch for his conduct. I did so upon his promise to apologize to the Ladies which he did. The "Chester" called at my office to day and now said he recognized his watch this morning and that the Pocket-book he claimed to have lost he found in his Book. Very Respectfully Jno J. Vicksburg Miss Lieut I have the honor to inform you that a White man from Choctaw Co Ala went into the private room of the Ladies who are engaged in teaching the Freedmens School have and grossly insulted them - Capt Sunderland at the request of the Ladies went to protect them when he (The Choctaw man) made an assault upon him whereupon I arrested him sent him to the Guard house and kept him there about three hours Some of his friends called and told me if I would let him go they would take him home. I did so after he had made a suitable apology to the Ladies. I hope my action in the matter will be sustained. Very Respectfully Your Most Obt Servt Jno. J.
