Sageville Miss Dear Sir I have the honor to acknowledge the rest of your communication of yesterday in reference to the beating of Freedwoman "Phebe". There is a wide difference between your Son's statement and her affidavit in relation to the origin of the quarrel developing it may be amicably adjusted when I see you. Knox Bvt Maj Sub Comm District of Meridian Bureau Refugees Freedman and Abandoned lands Office Sub Comm Meridian Miss June 23 1866 Campbell A Kemper Co Sir I have the honor to inform you that an affidavit has been filed in this office setting forth that you beat Freedwoman "Mary" the daughter of Susan and wife of Ellick and that you afterwards ordered them off your place. I have directed them to return and ask you to settle with them for the time they have been in your employ. Any cruel or ill treatment on the part of an employer breaks his contract with the employees and consequently they are at liberty to hire to whom they please. Respectfully yours Jno. J.
