Knox Bvt Maj & Sub Commr District of Meridian Bureau Refugees Freedmen & A Lands Office Sub Comr Meridian Miss July 5 1866 Hayden Mr. Sir The bearer states that you have discharged him from your employ and refuse to make a settlement with him please furnish him with an account in order that I may know if there is anything due. & Obliged Jas W. Sunderland Capt & Asst Sub Com District of Meridian 67 Bureau Refugees Freedmen & A. Lands Office Sub Com Meridian Miss July 5 1866 Gray A.E. Mr Hickory Station Miss Dear Sir I am informed by Freedman John that by reason of your Complying with my orders in releasing his Daughter to Courts of your County since you owe him ten dollars and took or sent back said Freedmans Daughter to her Master. I have the honor to inform you that in my opinion said money can be recovered apply to Hon R. Leachman U.S. Dist Att at this place and he will give you such legal advise on the subject as you may desire I have also to inform you that the "Civil Rights Bill" is now in full force in this State and Should Mr. Johnson refuse to release the Girl upon the request of said U.S. Dist. Att. he will be arrested and held for trial under said Bill I have requested said Att to take charge of this case. Very Respectfully Your Most Obt Servt Bvt Maj & Sub. Comr District of Meridian
