I have the honor to enclose herewith Pay vouchers for Capts Chapman Sunderland and myself for the month of July 1866. Please remit in U.S. Currency by express at my expense as we cannot realize on the checks you sent us last month. We sent them to Vicksburg the Banks refused to cash them. Sent them to Mobile with a similar result — then sent them to N.O. by a friend and as yet have received no money. Please send us the Greenbacks soon as possible as we are all out of money and credit and

The bearer Freedman Henry Bates states that you have possession of his Son and that you refuse to let Henry have him unless he pays you Fifteen dollar

It becomes my duty to inform you that unless said Freedboy is apprenticed to you Henry is Entitled to his care & custody and I would advise you to let him go without delay

Comr, Dist of Meridian.
