Genl Vicksburg Miss Sir I have the honor to transmit for approval Requisition for Stationery for use of this Office and would respectfully state that unless they meet with approval I shall be unable to transact the business of the Office of this Sub Dist I am Sir very respectfully Your Obdt Sevt Thomas H Norton Bvt Maj USA Sub Asst Comr Bureau Refugees Freedmen and A Lands Head Qrs Sub Dist Meridian Meridian Miss August 17 1867 Smith W.H. Bvt. Lt. Col. AAA Genl. Vicksburg Miss Sir Application has been made at this office by Adeline Edwards of Meridian Miss for transportation for her mother Matilda Brown whom she represents in destitute Circumstance from Fincastle, Bottetour Co. Va to this State The sd Adeline is a young woman enjoying good health and apparently able and willing to support her aged mother if she could secure the required transportation to this [[strikethrough]] state [[/strikethrough]] city I am Sir Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servt Thomas H Norton Bvt Maj USA Sub Asst Com 34 Bureau Refugees Freedmen and Abandoned Lands Hd Qrs Sub. Disct of Meridian Meridian Miss August 19, 1867 Whitney John Lieut. Sub. Asst. Comr Bu. R.F. and A.L. Sir Peter Farley freedman the bearer of this letter resided last March in Wayne Co. Miss 11 miles from Winchester Dr. Calvin Moody to whom the said Farley was indebted in the sum of $17.00 during the absence of the latter levied an attachment of execution and had the House sold for the sum of $57. or thereabouts This seizure was made in violation of State laws that each head of a family shall have a House and other Enumerated Stock which shall be exempt from attachment execution for debt &c. Peter furthermore represents that prior to the Emancipation that he lived in cohabitation with a Woman who was a slave for after the surrender she separated from him, and he married another woman for this he is threatened with indictment for Bigamy by the Civil Authorities of that county and is afraid to return to his home without military protection It is evident the proceedings taken against this freedmen are illegal and I would respectfully request that you take his affidavit and afford him the protection and redress the circumstances require I am Sir Very respectfully Your Obdt Servt Thomas H Norton Bvt.
