Meridian Miss August 19, 1867

Bu. R.F. and A.L.

Sir
Peter Farley freedman the bearer of this letter resided last March in Wayne Co. Miss 11 miles from Winchester Dr. Calvin Moody to whom the said Farley was indebted in the sum of $17.00 during the absence of the latter levied an attachment of execution and had the House sold for the sum of $57. or thereabouts

This seizure was made in violation of State laws that each head of a family shall have a House and other Enumerated Stock which shall be exempt from attachment execution for debt &c.

Peter furthermore represents that prior to the Emancipation that he lived in cohabitation with a Woman who was a slave for after the surrender she separated from him, and he married another woman for this he is threatened with indictment for Bigamy by the Civil Authorities of that county and is afraid to return to his home without military protection

It is evident the proceedings taken against this freedmen are illegal and I would respectfully request that you take his affidavit and afford him the protection and redress the circumstances require

I am Sir
Very respectfully
