47 It is stated that the freedman after his committal made application to you for a certain sum of money which you are indebted to him and that you refused to make payment and still withheld the money lawfully due him As soon as the prisoner is released from custody you are directed to report in person at this office to have this charge against you investigated unless you can forward by mail a satisfactory explanation or refutation of the same I am Sir Very resply Your ob Sevt Thomas H Norton Bvt Maj USA Sub. Turner and Hugh Enterprise of certain articles of silver plate Property of Jackson Brooks (freedmen) has been forwarded to these Head Qrs for investigation and report. A letter was sent from this office Aug. 31 67 to Mesr? Turner and Hough requesting them to deliver up the above named property to said freedmen Jackson Brooks and as no reply thereto has been received information is required as to who then this Communication was delivered and if so what action (if any) has been taken the matter.
