Bass Meridian, Miss Madam, Adam Adams (freedman) complains at this office that you still decline settling his claim against you, and which you acknowledge just. At the interview which we had at this Office July 20, 1867 my understanding was that it was your desire and intention to settle your indebtedness to your freedman as soon as you had sold the proceeds of this years cotton crop. I am informed that you have already disposed of the greater portion of your crop, It will become my unpleasant duty to stay the sale of the remaining portion of your [[crossed out]] portion [[/crossed out]] cotton unless satisfactory reasons are furnished this Office for your refusing to pay your freed man. I am Madam Very Respectfully Your Obt Servt Andrew Thomas Agt B. R. F. & A.L.
