32. got permission to send his son, a boy named Guss, about 15 years old, on an errand in this city but afterwards carried him off with him into Alabama. Father and son were both the former slaves of said Hall. Freedmen report that men from Chickasaw and adjoining Counties in Ala. go around among them and make threats to that effect that all such "niggers" as have left their former masters in Ala and moved to this place will be carried back with or without the consent of the Bureau. This causes great excitement among the freedmen, and I most earnestly recommend that steps be taken, whereby outrages of this kind may be prevented. Henry E. Rainals Capt. V.R.C. Sub. Comr. Bu.
