E.B. page 2. | DeKalb Miss April 18th 1866  In reply to a communication requesting the release of certain children belonging to Freedmen. "Orange" who are held against the wishes of the Father, by Mr P N. Gully, States that he has received a petition from  one Elen a Freedwoman asking that the children in question be not released. States that he is willing to prove before his court that the children have been properly and legally bound. That said Orange had told him to bind them that Orange never was married to their Mother and had said so on a hundred occasions and states that Orange is anxious to return and live with Mr Gully and acknowledged that he (Orange) had behaved badly, that Orange is anxious to get the children in order to injure Mr Gully and not for any love he bears the children, says that if Orange will show a legal right to the children he will do all in his power to see him righted. also states that his arrest is not the proper court to have them released, that if Orange has any grounds for complaint advises him to make a proper showing to the Precinct Court and they or the Judge will give him a hearing for his children encloses petition aforesaid |

Meridian Miss Sept 26 1866  Makes application for an appointment in one of the Vet Res Corps Rgt USA States that he enters the Vol Service as 1st Lieut 1st Comr Vol. Inft April 19th 1861 promoted to Captain on the following month again appointed Captain in 5th Com Vol. Inft June 21st 1861 served with that Regt in the Shenandoah Valley & Army of Virginia Lost a leg at the Battle of Cedar Mountain Aug 9th 1862 and taken Prisoner. Transferred to the Vet Res Corps Sept 5 1863. |
