Hyer 1st Lieut 18th Inf Disbursing Officer 10 A.G.O. 8/1 Disbursing Office Freedmen's Branch A.G.O. Columbia S.C. Jany 20.1874 Sir I understand that there are several parties in this section of the state who claim to have been colored soldiers and can claim bounty under the Act of March 3. 1873. I have the honor to ask to be informed what advice and instructions, should they ask of me, to enable them to have their claims properly made out and sent to Washington for consideration Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servt J.K. Hyer Ast Lieut 18th Inf Disbursing Officer See L.R. 52/ 31 11 A.G.O. 9/1 Disbursing Office Freedmen's Branch. A.G.O. Columbia, S.C. Jan 22. 1874 Sir: I have the honor to report that I find, upon examining the List of Claims and Confidential papers in my possession, in many instances the difference of one or two letters in either the christian or surname, such as:- Simon Carry and Simon Carey and Crossby McCade and Crosby McLeade - and two cases as:- John Kendall - Confidential paper John Kendal - List of Claims John Kendel - Discharge and in another case I find Peter Moses a Private on the Confidential paper and as a musician on the List of Claims. &c I do this in order to be assured, whether or not. these discrepancies materially affect these papers or will in identifying the claimant.- and whether the List of claims and the Confidential papers are taken from separate records or one the copy of the other Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servt J. K. Hyer 1st Lieut 18th Inf Disbursing Office See L.R. 51/ 12 A.G.O. 10/1 Disbursing Office Freedmen's Branch, A.G.O. Columbia, S.C. Jany 22. 1874 Sir I have the honor to suggest that a List of the unpaid claimants for Bounties, in this state, be printed upon posters, similar in form to those of Major J. M. Anderson, these to be sent to every post office in the state and posted in the most conspicuous place, so that claimants, who may, since they presented their claims, have moved to another part of the state, be more likely reached and disbursements made. There are in the state thirty-one (31) counties and about three hundred and thirty (330) post offices, with a "notice" in each post office and a sufficient number distributed in the larger cities, steamboats, depots &c, I am of the belief that these claimants will be heard of, if "dead", and from, if "alive." With this suggestion I enclose an alphabetical list of all the unpaid claims I have in any possession. I have made a list of all the post offices in the state, so that if this suggestion is approved and the posters sent, I can distribute them to all parts of the state without delay- See L.R. 56- (over)
