result of a correspondence with him in endeavoring to identify the man and to establish the proof of his death.

Should the fact of Wordier's death be satisfactorily proven (and there seems to be no doubt but it will)- and the money that was due him transferred to the Treasury whom shall I notify (in accordance with instructions contained in letter from your office of July 18, 1873) to make a new claim for his money, the mother (and I suppose 'widows') of the child or Mr. Wordier?

I have also enclosed a copy of the Confidential List in this case to show how much it coincides with the description contained in Mr. Verdier's letter.

Sir:_
I have the honor to submit the following case for instructions how to proceed:_

From one Julius Glover, an Attorney at Orangeburg S.C. I received on the 19th of March 1873 a letter bearing date of March 17th, in which he states that one Jacob Bronson claimed the bounty money of Joseph A Pierce (deceased) late as Corporal, [Co J. 55th Regt Mass. Vols (Certificate 333037)-that Pierce before his death had sold to Mr Bronson his claims for bounty and discharge paper, a fact that could easily be proven-that he (Bronson) had employed heir to obtain the money, and therefore requested instructions how to proceed.

Having once net Mr. Glover, I in reply, gave in substance what I wished to obtain (the proof of death): what disposition of the money would be made, and what steps would be necessary to proceed a proper claim for the same.

I was informed, in reply, what the case was given up- "too much trouble", was the reason given. There seemed to be no desire to give any proofs of or facts connected with the death of Pierce. I therefore wrote to Mr

Bronson requesting that in case he did not wish to prove his claim, that he should furnish me with the proof of the death of Pierce. To this letter (of the 4th inst), I have received no reply.

At present it appears improbable that further proof of the death of Pierce can be obtained, at least from these parties.

Should Mr. Bronson, be entitled, (through this alleged transfer of the claim and discharge paper) to the money due Pierce, it seems strange that he should so suddenly discontinue his prosecution of the claim, unless it be what he has made this attempt through false pretenses, having obtained through some means a knowledge of Pierce's military record.

I would state that Orangeburg is about sixty miles from Columbia and request to be informed if it would not hasten the final disposition of this case by proceeding to that point and obtain if possible, all the facts connected with the death of Pierce and his transfer of claims and discharge paper
