South Carolina, Feby 25, 1874

Lieut. Joseph K. Hyer, }
18th Infantry,
Disbursing Officer
Columbia S.C,
  Sir: I have seen your Circular which was received at the Post Office, at this place, Yesterday. It gives the names of persons for whom you have bounty money, and you invite these parties to correspond with you, and you will advise them of the steps necessary to be taken to secure the amount due them.
   Among the names mentioned in your circular is the name of Peter Read. He lives with me, works for me. He has been in the U.S. Army 104th Regiment, Company H, S.C. Colored Troops. Col. Fraser commanded his Regiment - Capt. Cumming commanded his company. These things he tells me; and, at his request, I write this to you to learn the steps necessary to be taken to secure the amount due him. Please answer this, and let me know what is to be done. He is not able, himself, to attend to any business of this sort.
To assure you concerning myself, I refer you to our Senator from this County - Hon. G.F. McIntyre, now in Columbia. Also to Hon. F.L. Cardoza State Treasurer, and to Mr. McKinny Chief Clerk in Treasurers Office. And to Mr. William M. Thomas one of our representatives.
This is enough. I hope to hear from your soon.
Respectfully
J.M. Cantwell
Atty at Law
