Josiah Smith Pvt, "B" Co., 4th Reg't U.S.C.A (H'y) was born in the (town & Co. not given) Tennessee, was enlisted the 1st day of June 1863, at Island Tenn., but Lt. Gasman, and was mustered in teh 13th day of August 1863, at Columbus K'y, by Lt. F. J. James, for three years. 
At the time of enlistment he was 18 years old, and 5 feet 5 inches high, Black complexion, Black eyes, Black hair, and by occupation a Laborer. He was discharged [[strikethrough]] or died [[/strikethrough]] 25 day of Febr'y 1866, at Pine Bluff Ark. Capt E. Webster was commanding officer, and Joshua Green first sergeant at time of soldier's discharge. The following are the names of one or more of his company who enlisted at or about the same time and place: Bowman Spencer enlisted 1 day of June 1863, and Ransom Scott, enlisted 1 day of June 1863.

REMARKS.
1. If a slave, that fact and name of owner will be noted here.
2. Any other peculiar fact of event connected with the soldier's history will also be noted.

Borne as a "Slave on the M. O. Roll of Co. Joined at original organization. On roll of Co. for Sept and Oct 1863 he is reported "Sick in Quarters". On Roll for Novr and Decr 1863. "Detailed as a Fifer" On Roll of Co for May and June 1864, he is borne as a musician. From Aug 31st to Dec 31st /64, "on daily duty as Musician." From Febr'y 28th to June 30th 1865, "On daily duty as Musician." He is absent without remark on last Muster Roll of Co.
