Respectfully referred to Capt: E.B. Gates, A.S.A.C. who will visit Piedmont and ascertain how many how many freedpeople, there are in that vicinity, who will attend school, and impress upon them the necessity of buying a lot of land and building, a school house themselves; if they cannot do it all themselves, ascertain what amount of assistance it would require to complete it and any information about the people in that section of your District, as well tend to show the expediency of building a house as requested in the within communication of Miss. Hlen Jewel Warren. 
Piedmont District being a good Agricultural region, the freedmen ought to be in a condition to support a school themselves. 
Please report at your earliest convenience what action is necessary to comply with the within communication.

Respectfully returned, with the information, that there are from thirty to thirty five children in the vicinity of Piedmont, who would attend school. Wm. Blackmore will give a piece of land for a School lot, one half acre - They are not able to build a house themselves. I would recommend and appropriation of 100$, to enable them to erect a building.
