List in question furnished me certainly does read $85 50/100 (and not $88 50/100) it being entered also in my "Register of Claims" as reading $85 50/100. I must confess my inability to determine how I came to perpetrate such an error unless indeed the sum of $88 50/100 had in some way fastened itself in my mind as a sort of stereotyped amount allowed in quite a number of the cases settled by me. Nothing is left me then, Colonel, but to express the hope that my present communication may be transmitted to the Treasurer of the U. States with a favorable endorsement from the Adjt. Genl. of the Army, suggesting that the $3.00 in excess may be again deposited to my credit with the Asst. Treas. at New York. I have the honor to be Colonel Very resp'y y'r obed't serv't Geo.
