Nashville Tenn. May 15th 1873.

Adjutant General
U.S. Army.

Sir
I have the honor to forward herewith a letter received from Andrew Ewing, Clarksville Tenn. relative to the claim of Eliza Grady widow of Thaddeus Grady late Prvt. Co. E. 16 Regt. U.S.C.T.
I would request instructions whether to accept this as sufficient evidence of the death of the claimant and to deposit the amount ($325.30) to the credit of the Treas. U.S. or to wait for further evidence.
In this connection I would state that I have been informed of the death of several parties whose claims have been allowed - but not in any authentic form, as by affidavits - and such evidence will be difficult to obtain, as the parties making the statement will not go to the expense of drawing affidavits and swearing thereto.
Very respectfully, Your obdt Servt
Maj 13th Inf. D.O.

Sir
I have the honor to return herewith the papers in the case of Catherine Prater (Colored) sent me for investigation.
I also enclose affidavits of two parties to her identity, and her discharge as laundress in Hospital at Knoxville Tenn.
From all the evidence I can obtain here on the subject, and from the good character given me of the witnesses, I am decidedly of the opinion that the identity of the claimant as mother of James Prater is fully established.
Very respectfully, Your obdt servant.
