May 21,1874 Maj Geo. Gibson 5th Inf. D.O. Memphis Tenn. Sir I have received the following instructions from the A.G.O. Copy of letter A.G.O. dated Washington May 15, 1874. In obedience to the foregoing I would respectfully state that the lists of the Claimants referred to were received since Major LaMotte's illness the 2nd inst. That I have duly notified the Claimants to send their addresses together with their "Identification papers" to this office so their accounts could be made and that they would then be duly notified where & when to appear for payment. Major LaMotte made a tour last month paying largely at Pulaski Tenn. Huntsville Ala. Chattanooga & Knoxville Tenn. So far as information has been received there will be no payments to be made at either of the last three named places. The claimants expected to be heard from reside in the vicinity of Nashville and Pulaski. I will send a list of claimants as soon as their addresses are received, as yet but few have been heard from. 81 Very respectfully, Your obedient servant. J L Horr Clerk to Major R S LaMotte 13th Inf. Nashville, Tenn. May 25, 1874. Maj Geo. Gibson 5th Inf. D.O. Memphis Tenn. Sir I respectfully acknowledge the receipts of your letter of the 2st inst. and would state that I wrote you, according to instructions, on the same date. In reply to your letter I have to report that the only claims to be paid by this office, that we have any Knowledge of whatever, are those contained in lists received on the 5th and 13th inst. of which about 15 or 20 are in this City, Nashville & vicinity and about the same number at Pulaski & vicinity, a few of these are nearer Huntsville but they might report at Pulaski. All these claimants have been notified by letter to report their addresses & send their "Identification papers" to this office without delay, that on receipt of the same they would then be notified where & when to appear for payment. As to the modus operandi we are also in ignorance but presume that Major Gibson will make the payments take them up on his account and that when Maj LaMotte becomes sufficiently able that he will then make a regular transfer of the said Claims & funds. I suppose after the payment that Maj LaMotte will of course receive the necessary orders to make said Transfer Maj Gibson having in the mean time paid & taken up the accounts. Some of these claimants were not notified until the 20th inst. so but very few of them have been heard from. It would therefore be advisable, so far as they are concerned, to postpone the visit
