#8. 14x20 [[underlined with yellow pencil]] cheaper canvas fr [[/underlined]] Hartman (cotton?). Whitened with Cremnitz+Popoma. After 10 days still a little tackey. Without oiling, in 3 1/2 hours I painted [[underlined with red pencil]] Sun Rise at [[M?]] Island [[/underlined]]. The white Sun with pure yellow aurora in very pale blue sky & orangeish rosy horizon. The sea a solid blue. w+ul, then cerul over, the light on the lawn brilliant greenyellow, underpaint with Cadm lt; vir+cadm; the brick path underpaint with cadm or+w, then aurora cad & harrisonred+w for the rose tints the shadows ul+w; vir into, the trees underp w. ul; then vir + ul for stems: otherwise no violet. presented to Mrs Wm H Browning. This [[underlined]] color theme [[/underlined]] the chrome [[underlined]] yellow [[/underlined]] of the setting or rising sun, the pure (cob+io or mineral blue hue) blue of the sky. The water with the yellow glow Thereon requires red on some object to complete it. So I saw it at Little Ferry, last Sunday evening. [[underlined]] Observation: [[/underlined]] The coloring is not broad and simple enough, although the simplicity of the arrangement, color scheme, technique is good.
I showed my water colors to Mr Sam T Shaw propr of the Grand Union hotel. He did not take to them, took me over to his house and showed me his collection:
