I thinly scumbled the underpainting with Z-W + Poppy to soften the yellow & orange; + new blue for the mountain; blue + oil for the shadows & foreground; aureol + oil very good glazing for yellow. put in the black. In this way it is easy to bring the colors and lights together and to [[underlined]] correct the underpainting as well as oil in [[/underlined]] before overpainting while it is still tacky.
S. 19. I painted the buildings over and had them about satisfactory; but in finding that light green of cadm & vir of the tree would not harmonize with the cadmium orange yellow wall, and that also all walls looked too little as a unity, I scraped it all off.
1) [[underlined]] It is absolutely necessary to have juxtapposed colors right: [[/underlined]] either tones of the same hue, or related hues, or complements, near complement, or black or white
2) It is necessary to [[underlined]] systematize the brushstrokes [[/underlined]] in order to unify the painting. Having deliberated on both things I will paint it again. The simplicity of technique realizes unity of effect. This picture is difficult to paint because the moment the factories and ugly foreground [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] are merely painted true, they loose all interest.
