The scene itself did not interest me; only the color at that hour the sun being low, the brilliant yellow lawn and the brilliant red houses being the colorite. a nearly white gleaming sky in which shadowy greens, and brilliant yellow green foliage and ivy across the red houses. The monumental arch in rose white light, the shadow of the arch violett, of the Wall blue, violettblue the house shadow; reds scattered on the chimneys in sky, on the lawn at trunks, in foliage on Monument; brilliant greens scattered in leafs across the houses; pale white, lemon yellows & cerul blues scattered across the houses as cornices, estoops, windows in light. Violett in foreground shadow road. That is the proposition.
[[underlined]] Observation [[/underlined]] Aureolin + L.Oil on a [[strikethrough]] marble [[/strikethrough]] glazed china slab is very tackey after 3 or 4 weeks when rose madder is dry.--
