normal tone; no shadows are visible excepting holes, depths. But they may be simulated by dark objects against those of local colors. All the iron and mars yellows, oranges, reds, purples, violets, all tones of grey; greyed ceruleum and ultramarine, madders; spectrum red, chromium oxide, greyed viridian and cobalt violet (excluding cadmiums, lemon yellow) make up this very permanent and solid palette: black willows against a red elevator bldg, black piers, docks, piles, next to deep red canal boats, black openings, chimneys, people, caves, rock crevices, lumber, trunks, especially after rain; limbs of trees, smoke etc; grey clouds, fences, gables, windows; white sails, cabins, dress, sand, rock, skylights, clouds, smoke, steam, signs, masts; blues reds, oranges greens on grass, houses, cabins, boats, violets on roofs, walls, ashes, etc etc. Thus a picture of sombre solid local colors only, [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] on the principal masses of its objects and with black and white objects simulating light and shadow, is truly pictorial in its illumination.
