Aug. 21.-11 14x20 inches [[underline]] WN [[?]] grey
Oil ground canvas [[/underline]] stretched, well soap washed and rinsed on stretcher, warps a trifle; painted with ZWhite & pure kerosene (WN). [[underline]] Observation [[/underline]] This does not , if thin, give a good white ground, compared with paper or plaster wall, nor an even one and I partly scraped and sandpapered it. Drew with Chinese ink on it. Then again painted all with Cambridge white, no medium and added ultram for the shadows and had to paint moist into it with the colors, to which Linseed and a little WN amber varnish was added. All this is unsatisfactory, since no real white and brilliancy is possible. The Cadmium yellows are even much more luminous that the white and in the house shadows I had to add much oil in order not to smear the moist underpaint and the colors into another. It is better with a grey ground to use it so for the shadow underground and only paint the lights white. One needs a dry ground to set firmly draw colors on in a good stroke. The waste of time too counts! finished in 6 hours: Cadm Aur & Ora, RM & AlCr, Vir, Cer, Ultr, Camb Wh, ZW, SpRed, LY. LOil+little amber varnish WN.--no turps or petrol.--
