The sketch is insufficient to render [[strikethrough]] an even [[/strikethrough]] adequately a mere summary or even detailed drawing of the distant railroad bridge and town on the hills. But it notes the impression. The task is not to give [[underlined]] more [[/underlined]] than the sketch gives, but its impression is to be realized in the picture. Namely it must be clearly ascertained; for rendering-, what the pictorial idea of bridge and houses are, what its masses, outlines, line-character, light, shadows, colors contribute to the pictorial idea and to the charm of the rest of the sketch. They are the background and offer no main colors, but mere character to what is beyond the river, its blue currents. Only what they add in color-effect is of importance, if it [[strikethrough]] [[bespodes?]] [[/strikethrough]] characterises, in addition [[strikethrough]] ally [[/strikethrough]], the locality. Therefor it is a matter of feeling and judgement to try for the effect in mind, with the brush, instead of going back to the scene for minute study. The special task is how to represent such multitude of things as bridge-structure and town houses on hills in a unity as a pictorial effect, instead of a photographic unpictorial illustration which would be of no interest in the picture. A multitude of shadows, lights; square, sharp, interwoven, overcutting, etc and of local colors not strong, all making a unity of mass of texture, to which the sunlight, and air and the [[underlined]] indifference of the eye and mind [[/underlined]] contribute special generality or superficiality of observation! as it often is the case with a foreground. Gradation in a picture from the focus of interest and effect to the uninteresting but pictorially [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] unessentials
