Nov. 7. oiled in, after inking the drawing, underpainted without addition of oil,: Cremnitz Wh Shfld, aurora cadm, ultr bl, cerul; - the water with cerul seemed too green; went over with ulta+wh, seemed to violettish, but the aurora cadm is so [[underlined]] orange [[/underlined]] yellow that it combines exceedingly well with ultram blue, both light blue and very deep blue. The effect lead me to next day paint it as a snow scape with yellow instead of red houses. The sky top wh+aureolin makes a fine greenish yellow white, and with the violett[[strikethrough]]ish [[/strikethrough]] horizon (cob viol,+WL+little Ul) adding a beautiful new color to it; the gas tank had to be green instead of red.--(see note June 27, 1916 page 442
[[underlined]] Observation: [[/underlined]] : If one do not go at the [[underlined with red pencil]] underpainting [[/underlined]] with the very colors of the sketch, i.e. of the [[underlined with red pencil]] effect intended [[/underlined]], one wastes not only color, oil, time, energy, and good technik, but loses the value of underpainting namely: to judge the effect intended. Therefor it is not good to commence with general colors either white and grey or blue and yellow, in order to continue with more variety of color; but rather: one must put down the effect intended, all the local colors and then proceed to more unify the colorite, if necessary. [[underlined]] If I want to paint what has never been done, I must not start out [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] by doing what has been custom.
Nov 15. scraped it, re-oiled (not [[strikethrough]] always [[/strikethrough]] everywhere), finished with Pop+Li.+Amb & Mussini [[underlined with red pencil]] ZW [[/underlined]]; RH; HarrR; ul; cer; vir; stront; cad 1. auro & ora; no WL.-
[[underlined]] Observe: [[/underlined]] In [[underlined with red pencil]] painting from memory [[/underlined]] or imagination one omits useless detail and supplies it by color-spots which is pictorially far superior to painting from nature. Copyism of nature is to be at an end. I will paint powerful new colorite and, on the most correct preparation of drawing, idealistic proportion, tone play, in start from such preparatory full size study, [[underlined]] paint [[/underlined]] vigorously, yet with enchanting depth [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] of space and [[rhytming/]] of distribution. Since the mode of our life requires the moment.
